Your Cake-Smash Session - For 1st Birthday
A child's first birthday is a momentous occasion, and what better way to celebrate this milestone than with a delightfully messy cake smash shoot?
The Four Stages in a cake smash session
The cake smash shoot will last around an hour & is divided into four fun & fabulous stages, so your baby does not get bored: Birthday, Making, Smashing, and Bath Tub.
Although there are four stages, you can pick one backdrop from my collection for your entire session. There are lots of different backdrops to choose from!
Parents and siblings can join in with each section for a few piccies, but you will need to sit on the floor with your baby as the backdrops are child sized and there isn't the room to stand.

Backdrops for your cake smash session
I have a range of backdrops for your cake smash session.
Although the session is done in four parts, you can only choose ONE backdrop for your whole session. You can not bring your own backdrops to my studio.
I'm always adding to my collection, so if you want a particular theme please let me know and I'll see if I can source it for you.
Let's get messy! Read on for more info on each section...
Stage One 'Birthday'
Stage Two 'Making'
This is where it starts to get messy. We use props such as flour, eggs, bowls and wooden spoons etc to make it took like your child is 'making' their cake!
Stage Three 'Smashing'
This is the fun part. We then bring the cake out and your baby can 'smash' it / eat it / bash it with the wooden spoon etc! Sometimes they need a bit of help, other times they dig straight in.
Stage Four 'Bath Tub'
At the end of your session, I bring the bath-tub out and fill it with a little bit of warm water, so I can take some cute 'bath-tub' photos to complete your session (Modesty is ALWAYS preserved). Don't forget to bring a towel.

What to expect - My studio space
My cozy little photography studio is convieniently nestled in a converted garage, at the side of my house.
It is accessed via the gates at the side of my property, so there's no need to come into my house at all.
If needed, there's space to get changed in the back, if you want to change into clean clothes before you go home, for example.
While it may not be the largest or most luxurious of settings (we are very down to earth, here at Fyshcreative Photography), it is equipped with everything we need to capture your wonderfully messy cake smash, including professional lighting, backdrops & props.
Warning - You WILL leave messy!
Parents often say 'I didn't expect it to be so messy'.
I use real flour & eggs for the 'Making' part and that alone is messy enough, without the sticky cake and butter cream!
Even if you don't join in, your baby may want a cuddle when they are gloriously sticky - so be prepared to get a little cake or flour on you!
In most cases you'll all need to go home for a shower and a clean up before you go out-out in public so it's usually a good idea to not plan anything directly after your session!
Preparing your baby (and yourself) for the session
You WILL get messy!
A few messy play sessions beforehand at home, can really help prepare your baby for their cake smash. Let them touch and get messy with flour, cake, cream or icing to get used to the texture.
Be prepared to get messy yourself during the session, even if you don't join in as you may need to cuddle your little one whilst they are covered in cake.
If your little one is shy, suffers separation anxiety or doesn’t like new places / strangers, let me know so I can take a gentler than usual approach, and try to build your baby's confidence as we go along.
It's my party & I'll cry if I want to
A cake smash can go one of two ways. Be prepared for either option!
Some one year olds love cake and will go to town eating the cake and they just can’t get enough. Other one year olds are scared of the cake, they will cry and won’t eat any cake.
Some babies love it but others may have a melt down, if they aren't used to the feeling on their skin, especially if you don't usually let them get messy. I like parents to be prepared for both possibilities.
When a one year old cries from the cake some parents can be disappointed. I understand this can be difficult when you wanted the cute, messy and funny cake smash pictures.
Children have a mind of their own and we will just go with the flow.
What to wear
I recommend choosing your backdrop 1st - then picking something that will go well with it.
You don't need expensive outfits - you can get really cute & inexpensive clothing from Ebay or Amazon for these shoots.
Remember that the cake and icing can ruin clothing especially if it’s tulle & icing with a colored dye may not come out.
Your baby can rock three outfits during their shoot. One outfit for their birthday style photos, then one for their 'making' session, and one for their actual cake smash. You could even bring a cute bath-cap for the tub time pics at the end too.
You will not need socks or shoes as I always prefer barefoot for babies; baby toes are cute!
Your Giant Cup Cake
We provide a giant cup cake in any colour you like, with your child's name on the front.
These are all made in-house.
Please make sure your child has tasted some cake and icing before your photoshoot to make sure they don’t have a reaction to the ingredients.
Please let me know before your session if your child has any allergies. We can cater for most allergies such as dairy & gluten intolerance.
Some parents worry about feeding their baby with sugar. In my experience, the cake smash is much more about making mess.
Although your little one may taste their cake, most don’t eat very much of it but instead enjoy playing!
Just let me know if you woyuld rather substitute the cake for a watermelon smash instead!
